Career
Career is our realization process in the way of professional and personal aspects of ourselves through the choices we make for ourselves and the targets we set ourselves by taking the necessary training. (APEGEM Publishing, 2013). We take help from experts or experienced people at the point of ridding of the problems or obstacles we may encounter. Especially in the recent years, career counselors solve problems of educational and professional life in our country.
Career Counseling
Career counseling is counseling process of intended individuals and occupations, careers, career roles and responsibilities, career decision-making and career planning, free time activities planning, career paths and other career development activities (such as resume writing, job interview, job search techniques) , their careers-related conflicts and problems (NCDA, 2013). We can represent counselors as a role model and a group guide (leader) for advisees and specify the roles counselors takes on as an advisee's advocate, trainer or life coach.But it must be not forgotten, career counselor is not a psychological counselor or psychotherapist.
Ethical Points in Career Counseling
Career counseling is by definition having a huge responsibility at the point of shaping of an individual his or her own life. But it must never be forgotten that there are ethical rules which attention must be paid to them in fulfilling this responsibility. Desired success can not be achieved without obeying the rules and interviews will go to the points where counselor and client don't want. It will return to a conversation between two friends or confidants rather than a client - consultant relationship.
The first and most important point is to improve career counselors themselves constantly in career counseling. They should have knowledge in all matters what clients want help. Furthermore counselors should not make any claims or mention. It is not to be forgotten that counselors are responsible to clients they serve and to institutions they perform activities for them. In addition, consultants have stop interviews at the point of being them insufficient and should ask for help from other consultants or their super-vision.
Career counselors must accept services only they can do with the document.Firstly they must circumscribe the limits of interviews and explain the rules of interview to the advisee.
Another important point for career counselors is not having sexual, physical or romantic intimacy with their advisees or old advisees. Career counselors must not be condoned deliberately or repeated sexual comments, gestures or physical contact which are defined as sexual harassment or they can't sexually harass anyone.
Career counselors must refrain from putting into words of their problems.It must not be forgotten that consultants are always responsible for their own behaviors.Furthermore recommendations and behaviours of them can change lives of others.
Counselor has to accept advisee's freedom of choice and its necessity.Counselor has to make delimitation for advisee, under special circumstances counselor must inform advisees for delimitation conditions of their freedom of choices. So when counselor has started helping relationship or earlier, counselor has to inform advisee about purposes, goals, techniques, procedures, rules and restrictions which could effect relationship. The most important obligation of the consultant as an individual or in a group relationship is to respect honesty of advisees and raise the prosperity level.
Counselor should be aware that there will be advisees from various ethnic, racial, religious, and socioeconomic groups and consider this situation in all his or her own equipments (tests, applications, etc ...) Counselor and inspector should consider the appropriateness of the assessment. When general integrity, reliability and related issues, evaluations are applied for the career decisions, they can be interrogated legally as well as ethically.
Attention should be paid to the principle of confidentiality and information should remain confidential in relationship and as a result of relationship. Counselors must recognize the limits of competence and exclusively fulfil the functions they are prepared. Consultants will warn employers about estimated disruptive and damaging conditions, they should notify employers about the conditions that limit their productivity.
These rules which we have mentioned are recognized by many career consulting firms in the world (NCDA, etc...) Rules are issued in written order in order to pass job interviews efficiently. Career guidance counselors will constitute a very important point for development of an individual and society with serving and being aware that they takes responsibilities at the point of an individual rotates his or her own life.
